NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENT CONSTRUCTION

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4730651
A reactor fuel element is described with means for retaining volatile fission products within the element. The means comprises a fluoride conversion material for reacting with the barium and cesium fission products to form relatively involatile fluorides, and it is located inside the fuel containers, preferably as a coating on the outer surface of the fuel body or compact. The conversion material is a fluoride of Pb, Mg, Zr, Ce, Fe, or Cr. This method of retaining fission products is especially useful in the case where the fuel container is made of graphite. (D.L.C.)
