Theoretical work on a capillary thermionic emitter model in which the neutral Cs density varies from a high entrance value to a low exit value is reported. The plasma density, the sheath potential, and the sheath thickness vary along the capillary in the model. Electron emission predicted by the model is compared with experimental results obtained on a monocapillary structure. Results obtained in 43-hr experimental runs by multicapillary converters show that the power densities in these converters may be 10 to 50 times as great as those in conventional Ta systems. The capillary converter data demonstrate an insensitivity to electrode spacing over the range from 0.5 to 1.0 mm. The preparation procedure is given for operating the converters, and factors related to failure are reviewed. (J.R.D.)
