GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATION OF HYDROGEN ISOTOPES ON ACTIVATED ALUMINA

Journal Article · · Canadian Journal of Chemistry (Canada)

Columns of strongly activated reagent-grade alumina (apparently iron- free) were used for the chromatographic separation of D/sub 2/, HD, and H/sub 2/. A typical chromatogram of micromole quantities of the hydrogen isotope mixture shows H/sub 2/, HD, and D/sub 2/ peaks at 13.5, 17.9, and 28.2 minutes, respectively, for the column and flow conditions used. The slopes of the straight-line portions of the plots were 0.254, 0.287, and 0.238 (arbitrary units) for H/sub 2/, HD, and D/sub 2/, respectively. (P.C.H.)
