A reactor is described which avoids the need for fuelcoolant contact by effecting heat transfer through radiation. The reactor is similar to a high vacuum furnace in that the fuel is enclosed within a boiler having a system of cooling coils on its exterior. Some of the advantages of the reactor are: the fuel can be in the molten state and need not be canned, and fission products can escape from the fuel. (D.L.C.)
