PM-3A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT HAZARDS SUMMARY REPORT, SAFETY EVALUATION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4729304
An evaluation of the potential hazards associated with the operation of the PM-3A Nuclear Power Plant at the Naval Air Facility at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, under stable weather conditions was performed. A detailed analysis was made of an accident postulating failure of the primary system in which fission products were released to the containment structure, resulting in a continuous leakage of a radioactive plume to a stable atmosphere toward the personnel quarters. The evaluation of this accident indicates that the likelihood of personnel receiving excessive radiation doses is extremely remote. It is concluded that, in an extremely stable environment, the hazards associated with a maximum accident involving the PM-3A Nuclear Power Plant can be controlled by personnel relocation so that the hazard is insignificant.
