EXCITATION FUNCTIONS FOR THE REACTIONS INDUCED BY ALPHA PARTICLES ON Ag$sup 10$$sup 7$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
Cross sections of reactions induced by alpha particles on Ag/sup 107/ are measured up to 40 Mev by means of the radiochemical method with stacked foil targets. Observed excitation functions are for the ( alpha ,n), ( alpha ,2n), ( alpha ,3n), ( alpha ,pn), ( alpha , alpha n), and ( alpha , alpha 2n) reactions. For the ( alpha , alpha n) reaction the cross sections for one of the isomeric pair are determined. Excitation functions are calculated in terms of the statistical theory, using capture cross sections based on the diffusesurface optical model and the level density W(E) = C exp STA2{a(E - delta )} /sup 1/2/!. Adopting a = 3 Mev/sup -1/and pairing-energy values for delta , the experimental results are explained by the theory. Isomeric cross sections are obtained for the ( alpha ,n) and ( alpha ,3n) reactions. The ratios of higher spin states to lower spin states increases as the energies of alpha particles increase. The ratio is about twenty at 40 Mev for the ( alpha ,3n) reaction. (auth)
