PRIMARY COSMIC-RAY ALPHA PARTICLES. PART III

Nuclear photographic emulsions were exposed to the cosmic radiation on a high altitude balloon flight at 49 deg N geomagnetic latitude on 3rd August 1958. The total flux of primary alpha-particles, having kinetic energies greater than 400 Mev/nucleon, was found to be (87 approximately 8) particles/ m/sup 2/ ster s. Simultaneously, another set of emulsions was exposed at 61 deg N geomagnetic latitude. A comparison of the data obtained from the two flights leads to an estimate of the geomagnetic cut-off for 49 deg N as (500 plus or minus 50) mev/ nucleon kinetic energy. (auth)
