BROAD ATMOSPHERIC SHOWERS OF COSMIC RAY ORIGIN (in Russian)
The passage of high-energy, cosmic radiation (E/sub o/ > 10/sup 13/ ev) through the atmosphere results in the formation of showers'' of particles. Two important parameters in studying these particle showers are the total number of particles in a shower, and finding the axis of the shower by assuming a symmetrical decrease in particle density from the axis of the shower. A network of several thousand counters, including coincidence and anti-coincidence counters, may be spread out over an area of 60 to 100 m/sup 2/ to collect the required data. The energy of the primary particle causing the shower can be estimated from the total number of particles in the shower, and spacial distribution of the particles in the shower. Neutron counters surrounded with lead filters 1 to 4 cm thick are used to estimate the heavy nuclei in a shower. Methods of determining the spacial distribution of charged particles in a shower are expounded for distances of 1 to 25 meters from the axis of the showers with a total number of shower particles N> 10/sup 5/ at sea level. The spacial distribution and energy spectrum of mu -mesons at sea level and at 3860 meters are compared. Measurements at 3860 meters above sea level show that the number of bare nuclei in a shower having a total number of particles of 1O/sup 5/ to 10/ sup 6/ is significantly less than in a shower with N < 5 x 10/sup 4/. Data on the energy spectrum of bare nuclei are presented. The fraction of the total energy of a shower cartied by the various components is estimated. (TTT)
