On the relativistic effects in low-energy pion-nucleon scattering
The parts of the S and P amplitudes for the pion-nucleon scattering which in the Cini-Fubini approach do not depend on the pion-pion interaction are evaluated in a relativistic way. The self-consistency of the approximate theory used here is discussed on the basis of the integral equation for the resonance. This discussion shows that the theoretical results are affected by some uncertainty which however does not prevent definite predictions on the contribution of the pion-pion interaction. This contribution, although somewhat reduced with respect to that expected in the nonrelativistic approximation, is nevertheless required in order to fit the experimental data. The results obtained for the S-wave show the possibility of a quantitative determination of the contribution of the pion-pion interaction.
