Title: AN EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY: A Mu MESON BEAM OF 1 Bev

A proposal for production of a high-energy meson ( mu ) beam at the Cosmotron is discussed. The proposed method involves containing a beam of momentum-analyzed pions in a quadrupole lens system, which extends for a distance equivalent to one pion lifetime at the appropriate velocity, and collecting the decay muons in the same system. At the end of the containment, the decay muons are separated from the remaining pions and at the same time selected in energy by means of a momentum-analyzing magnet. The main features of the lens system and the expected muon beam characteristics are described. (J.R.D.)
