A 0+ min gave no sig 0+ nuclear transition may proceed through internal conversion (electric monopole transition), internal pair formation and two-quantum decay. Search for this possible two-photon decay of the first excited state in Zr/sup 90/, the 1.76 Mev 0+ level, was undertaken. Much care was taken to obtain a highly purified Sr/sup 90/ sample. Sr/sup 90/ decays with a half-life of 28 y to Y/sup 90/, which in turn decays to Zr/sup 09/, populating the 1.76 Mev level with a relative intensity of about 0.02%. The spectrum obtained with a sum coincidence spectrometer in a one hundred hour run, corrected for random and background coincidences, does not show the peak that would be expected from a summation of the two photons assumed to be simultaneously emitted in the decay of the 1.76 Mev level. However, from the experimental information it is possible to calculate an upper limit for the ratio of the probability of a twophoton transition T( gamma gamma ) to that for internal conversion T(EO).
