DEPARTURE FROM NUCLEATE BOILING--A SURVEY OF CORRELATIONS APPLICABLE TO THE DESIGN OF THE SM-2

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4728264
A survey of recent Departure from Nucleate Boiling'' correlations was made. These correlations are presented and compared. The effects of system variables on DNB heat flux is also discussed in view of special problems associated with reactor design. It is concluded that none of the correlations discussed is completely satisfactory and that an adequate theory for predicting DNB heat flux is still lacking. The qualitative effects of the system variables on DNB are understood but in many instances insufficient data are available for quantitative prediction. It is recommended that the WAPD correlation developed by De Bortoli et al., be used for the prediction of DNB heat flux in the SM-2 design. In transient analysis, the Menegus correlation is considered more useful for predicting DNB heat flux. (auth)
