An extensive study was made of the use of sulfur as a monitor for neutrons with energies from 2 to 20 Mev. Irradiated disks of pressed sulfur were burnt before counting to increase the efficiency and reproducibility of determining the P/sup 32/ activity. It was established that on burning irradiated suifur 95.5 plus or minus 0.5% of the P/sup 32/ activity is retained with a reproducibility of plus or minus 1.0%. Measurements of relative cross sections for the S/sup 32/(n,p)P/sup 32/ reaction were extended to 20.3 Mev using the T(d,n)He/sup 4/ and D(d,n)He/sup 3/ reactions to produce monoenergetic neutrons. Neutron production using Zr--T targets was examined as was the effect of extraneous neutrons from the D(d,np)D process on the S/sup 32/(n,p) reaction. (auth)
