THE ROLE OF ADDITIONAL IMPURITIES IN THE FORMATION OF LUMINESCENCE CENTERS IN THE PHOSPHOR ZnS-Cu

The possibility of obtaining a ZnS-- Cu phosphor without coactivators was invstigated. It was shown that, in this case, the absence of luminescence is related to the precipitation of copper as a colloid. A study was made of the irfluence of two types of additional impurities on the properties of a ZnS-- Cu phosphor: impurities compensating for the excess charge produced when a Zn/sup 2+/ ion is replaced by a Cu/sup +/ ion (such as, for example, Cl); and impurities with the same valency as the ions of the host lattice (such as Mn). It was found that both types of impurities promote the formation of green luminescence centers. A conclusion was drawn concerning the composition of the luminescence center on the basis of a comparison of the luminescence spectra of ZnS-- Cu phosphors with various additional impurities. (auth)
