HISTOLOGIC STUDY OF THE SMALL INTESTINE REMOVED BY MEANS OF BIOPSY AFTER RADIATION WITH THERAPEUTIC DOSES

Journal Article · · Sperimentale (Italy)

Histologic observations were made on the mucosa of human small intestine irradiated according to common radiotherapeutic methods. Specimens for biopsy were taken from a loop of intestine, included in the zone of radiation, by means of a modified Crosby's catheter. The postirradiation changes consisted mainly of atrophy of the intestinal villi and glands with a consequent flattening of the intestinal mucosa. Also noted were: marked damage of the caliciform cells, which decrease in number and take on a fusiform appearance; modifications of Paneth cells, which display changes, and a decrease in numbers; alterations of the striated border of the enterocytes, which lose its delimitation from the remaining cytoplasm and becomes irregular and thickened; deformation of the enterocytes; and decrease in the number of mitoses, shortly after treatment and with small x-ray doses. After the highest dose (5000 r), intestinal epithelial elements tended to disappear and be replaced by fibrous tissue. It was evident, however, that much lower doses also altered the functional activity of intestinal mucosa. (TCO)
