SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC STUDY OF THE COLOUR REACTION BETWEEN THORIUM IONS AND GALANGIN

Galangin (3,5,7-trihydroxyflavone) forms an intense yellow-colored complex wlth thorium ions. The color reaction was investigated for spectrophotometric determination of thorium. The complex shows maximum absorption at 410 m at pH 2.2. The region of maximum absorption shifts slightiy toward the higher wave lengths with increase in pH and at pH 4.2, it occurs at 420 m . The system obeys Beer's law over the pH range 2.2 to 4.2 and the method can be satisfactorily used for spectrophotometric determination of small quantlties of thorium. Molar composition of the complex, as determined by Job's and slope-ratio methods was found to be 1: 1. (auth)
