A process is given for preparing Mg-Th alloys by reduction of ThF/sub 4/ with an excess of Mg. The process comprises mixing ThF/sub 4/ with LiF and an alkaline earth metal fluoride to form a low-melting salt mixture, and reacting the mixture with excess molten Mg. The salt phase is easily separated from the alloy. Several examples of the process are given. (D.L.C.)
