Fast neutron irradiation of winter wheat seed to 350, 705 (1959) and 250, 500, 750, and 1000 r (1960) seemed to have no effect on germination; exposures to 1410 and 1760 r slightly reduced germination. However, most seediings exposed to 1000, 1410, and 1760 r perished during the winter. Generally, neutron exposure depressed seediing growth. Observations in 1960 of some surviving 1959 plants exhibited radiomorphological and hereditary (dominant mutation) changes. Neutron depression of seedling growth in relation to the percentage of chromosome aberrations is about 40-fold higher than in gamma exposure. (R.V.J.)
