SWELLING OF URANIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4727464

Pure U specimens were irradiated to approximates 0.3 at.% burnup at 275 deg C and then annealed at various temperatures in order to study the mecharism of swelling. For annealing at temperatures below 550 deg C, the density decreased by less than 1%. At temperatures above 550 deg C up to the alpha - BETA transformation temperature, the swelling increased sharply with temperature. A sharp increase in swelling was observed at approximates 600 deg C, probably due to bubble formation in recrystallized areas. (D.L.C.)
