Journal Article · · Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4727453
Evidence was found in a recent survey of medical and sness in maintenance to unnecessary patient exposure on of equipment revealed that a t was out-dated and often poorly housed. Needless exposure of the patient because of inadequate beam limitation was also noted. It was found that radiation from medical and dental sources exceeded that from failout. Or radiographic units inspected by the New York City Health Department, 70% did not provide for the shielding or patients' gonads during the taking of chest roentgenograms. Hence, each patient's gonads were being subjected to from 50 to 100 times the exposure necessary to take a good chest film; with a combination of inadequate as necessary, though the average was about 100. Chest fluoroscopy' exposed the patient to Several roentgens while a roentgenogram could be obtained with only 0.05 r. It was found that many nonradiological physicians and dentists operating x-ray equipment were unaware or the recommendations of the National Committee on Radiation Protection and Measurements. Seven recommendations are proposed for overcoming apprehension in the public mind, deterrent to necessary x-ray examinations. (TCO)
