An experimental investigation was made of the separation of Si/sup 29/ and Si/sup 30/ by the distillation of CH/sub 3/SiH/sub 3/. A separation column filled with wire spirals and having an effective separation length of 1 meter was used. The CH/sub 3/SiH/sub 3/ samples taken for isotopic determinations were converted to SiF/sub 4/ prior to mass spectrometric measurements. The data are plotted on a concentration ratio vs time graph, for ratios between head and bubble, head and natural occurrence, and bubble and natural occurrence, and it is seen that the heavier isotope Si/sup 30/ is enriched in the gas phase. The concentration ratio between head and bubbles after nearly 10 days is 1.025 for Si/ sup 30/ and 1.013 for Si/sup 29/ for a reflux rate of 60. From the estimated value of 50 theoretical plates for the column efficiency, a separation factor of 1.0007 for Si/sup 30/ and 1.00035 for Si/sup 29/ is obtained. (D.L.C.)
