The radiation stability of a compound is determined by the structure of a molecule, and by the reactivity of the molecule with the primary radiolysis products. Furan, pyrrole, thiophene, and pyridine were irradiated with fast electrons at --160 to --170 deg C, and the build-up of radicals was followed by the electron paramagnetic resonance method. The initial radical yields were 0.1, 0.5, and 1.1 for thiophene, pyrrole, and furan respectively. The increased reactivity of furan was due to activation of the k-position. In an analogous fashion, the radical yield from irradiating pyridine was greater than that of benzene under the same irradiation conditions. The presence of the heterogeneous nitrogen atom in the benzene ring led to an unequal distribution of electrons in the pyridine nucleus, and pyridine became more reactive than benzene. Analysis of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra indicated that two types of radicals are formed. In one case, a H atom was removed from the heterocyclic molecule to form a radical, and in the other case, a H atom was added to a neutral molecule to give a radical. In the first case, the radical showed up as a doublet line with a splitting approximates 30 oersteds, and in the second case, a multiple fine structure was obtained with a total splitting of 70 oersteds. The relative intensities of the triplet were 1: 2: 1. Pyridine also added a hydrogen to the gamma -position to give a triplet line with a splitting of about 60 oersteds between the end components, and a relative intensity of the components of 1: 2:. 1. However, the exact position at which the H atom adds to the neutral heterocyclic molecule is not definitely known. (TTT)
