THE FORMATION OF DIARYLNITROGENOXIDE RADICALS ON REACTION OF AN AMINE WITH A PEROXIDE RADICAL (in Russian)

The evidence of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on samples irradiated at low temperatures indicated that a secondary aryl amine can react with peroxy radicals as follows: ROO* + HNAr/sub 2/ yields ROOH + *NAr/ sub 2/ and ROO* + *NAr/sub 2/ yields RO* + ON*Ar/sub 2/. The (C/sub 6/H/sub 5/ )/sub 2/ N*O rad icals react readily with R* and ROO* radicals by the following mechanisms: R* + (C/sub 6/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/ N*O yields RON(C/sub 6/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/, and ROO* + ON*(C/sub 6/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/ yields RON(C/sub 6/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/ + O/sub 2/. Sample s of cumene containing a peroxy impurity and a secondary amine were irradiated with 1.6-Mev electrons at varying concentrations of the peroxy compound and of the secondary amine. On irradiating at temperatures greater than 0 deg C, the concentration of Ar/sub 2/N*O rose to a peak, and then fell off sharply. It was noted that the concentration of Ar/sub 2/N*O radicals continued to rise for a rather long time after the irradiation. If the irradiation was repeated, there was a sharp drop in concentration of (Ar)/sub 2/ N*O radicals. It was considered possible that Ar/sub 2/NH is formed as an intermediate compound, and that this compound is oxidized to Ar/sub 2/N*O radicals at high concentrations of peroxy radicals. (TTT)
