The effect of ionizing radiation on the properties of silicate rubber vulcanizates containing various amounts of silicate fillers introduced into the latex and coprecipitated with rubber was studied. Experiments were conducted with rubbers obtained from butadiene-styrene iatex with 22 to 57 parts silicate filler and from latex with 20 parts polystyrene latex and 19 to 30 parts silicate filler. The vulcanizates were made from mixes containing (in addition to varying filler amounts): rubber, 100 parts; paraffin, 2; rosin, 5; and thiuram, 1.5. The vulcanizates were gamma irradiated from a Co/sup 60/ source of 21000 g-equiv Ra with doses of 50 to 100 megarad. Irradiation lowered the tensile strength, elongation, and residual eiongation of the vulcanizates but increased their hardness. However, rubber vulcanizates containing 22 to 42 parts silicate filler irradiated with a dose of 50 megarad were shown to exhibit satisfactory mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, 80.2 to 88.7 kg/mm/sup 2/; and elongation, 470 to 520%. The addition of 20 parts polystyrene latex did not improve the resistance of valcanizates to irradiation. The introduction of 100 parts chalk or talcum into the rubber mixes sharply reduced the resistance. All the vulcanizates irradiated with a dose of 100 megarad were shown to lose strength and elasticity. (OTS)
