METHOD FOR PREPARING AN ENCASED KRYPTON-85 RADIATION SOURCE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4727140
A method is given for preparing encased krypton-85 radiation sources with the help of common laboratory means such as a normal vacuum-pumping equipment and an analytic balance. The method comprises the disposing of a certain weighted amount of krypton-clathrate within the capsule, evacuating the capsule afterwards, and sealing it. The sealed capsule is heated to perhaps 120 deg C by putting it into an oil bath. At 120 deg C, a temperature well above the disintegration temperature of the krypton-clathrate, the radioactive Kr/sup 85/ is set free quantitatively. Another way to get a predetermined source strength is to dispose the kryptonclathrate in a separate space of the capsule which is connected to its main space through a narrow channel. A radiation measuring device is set up in front of the radiation transparent window, which is part of the confinement of the main space, and when the required strength is reached the channel is sealed and the heater removed.
