NONELASTIC PROTON-NUCLEON INTERACTIONS AT THE 9 Bev ENERGY LEVEL (in Russian)

Studies carried out with an emulsion chamber irradiated with 9-Bev protons indicated that 760 events were attributable to nonelastic proton-nucleon scattering type interactions, including 492 (p-p) and 268 (p-n) events. Multiple scattering and ionization density measurements were made for identifying the secondary charged particles. The average number of the charged e (as Fe/sup 59 - mesons in the (p-p) events was found to be 2.36 450 deg C in a 0.14; in the (p- n) events the upper limit was estimated at 1.76 450 deg C in a 0.09. The experimental data on secondary protons did not agree with the statistics of the multiple generation theory; the number of high-energy protons was higher than predicted. Calculations based on the assumption of peripheral collisions of the nucleons with the exchange of a virtual meson at 1 Bev agreed well with the experimental results on the energy distribution of recoil protons, the angular distribution of charged e (as Fe/sup 59 -mesons, and the asymmetry of the angular distribution of secondary particles in (p-n) collisions. The one-meson exchange model was satisfactory only for characterizing the interaction at a small number of generated particles. (TTT)
