ELIMINATION OF PHOSPHATE INTERFERENCE IN FLAME PHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF STRONTIUM AND BARIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4726682
Studies on the interference of phosphate in the flame emission of calcium, strontium, and barium showed that there was a fall of intensity proportional to the quantity of the interfering anion up to a maximum depression for equimolar ratios of PO/sub 4/sup 3/ to Ca, Sr, or Ba. A thermostable phosphate was formed prior to the entrance of the cation irto the flame. Addition of appropriate quantities of lanthanum restored the intensity of the three alkaline earth lines to their values in absence of phosphate. Lanthanum was found to displace calcium, strontium, or barium from their phosphates prior to their entrance in the hot region of the flame. (auth)
