Vapor pressure measurements on halides of the rare earths (in German)

Journal Article · · Zeitschrift fuer Anorganische und Allgemeine Chemie
The sublimation pressure of the halides of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium (with exception of fluorides and cerium iodide) was determined by means of Knudsen's effusion method. From the results, heats of sublimation and other thermodynamic values of the salts were calculated. The heat of sublimation decreased with decreasing cation radius or with increasing anion radius, i.e., from lanthanum chloride to neodymium chloride or from lanthanum chloride to lanthanum iodide. This effect is explained as the result of the deformation of ions.
