A nuclear reactor fuel element comprising a fuel member enclosed in a protective sheath has within the sheath a device of lower melting point than the fuel member and of different material than the sheath. The device is so disposed that it undergoes noticeable change of shape on melting. The physical conditions to which the fuel element has been exposed may thus be assessed. (R.J.S.)
