THE GRAVIMETRIC STANDARDS UO$sub 2$ AND U$sub 3$$O$$sub 8$ USED IN THE URANIUM-OXYGEN SYSTEM (in French)

Journal Article · · Compt. Rend.
OSTI ID:4725072
The behavior of uranium oxides at 800 un. Concent 85% in air and at 900 un. Concent 85% in hydrogen was studied with a thermobalance. The variations of the composition of the oxide could be followed without tempering or manipulation of the product. The starting material was natural uranium with an impurity rate below 173 x 10/sup -6/. The uranium was oxidized in air at 800 un. Concent 85% C, the product was reduced in dry hydrogen at 900 un. Concent 85% , and the oxide was reoxidized in air at 800 un. Concent 85% . The composition of the oxides was calculated using 238.038 as the atomic weight of U. The results showed that the compound obtained by direct oxidation of U in air is slightly deficient in oxygen with respect to U/sub 3/O/sub 8/. The reduction product is not deficient in oxygen with respect to UO/sub 2/, and it is a good gravimetric standard. The product obtained by oxidation of oxides of the UO/sub 2+x/ phase in air at 800 un. Concent 85% C is stoichiometric U/sub 3/O/sub 8/. (J.S. R.)
