Employing a quantitative spectrophotometric method, the early post- irradiation behavior of the nucleic acids (DNARNA) in the cells of the granular layer and of the Purkinje (normochromatic cytotypes) of the cerebral cortex as well as in Gasser's ganglion was analyzed in mice that underwent an external teleirradiation with Co-60 gamma rays and collimated bundle on the head region. The animals, treated by doses of 1500 or 3000 rads, were killed at 10 min, 6 hr, 24 hr, and 7 days from the end of the treatment. As regards the DNA, the determinations of the nuclear quantities were carried out taking into consideration the nuclear volumes. A superposition in behavior of both DNA and RNA was noticed both in cerebellum neurons and in Gasser's gangliomc cells. In fact, a decrease was found after 10 min that became more noticeable after 8 hr and appeared reduced after 24 hr and further reduced after 7 days. Such variations were more evident in animals treated with 3000 rads. (auth)
