INTRODUCTION TO SLOWING DOWN APPROXIMATIONS IN NEUTRON TRANSPORT THEORY. Research Bulletin 2

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4724598
The general formulation of the neutron transport equation in the P/sub L/ and B/sub L/ approximations is examined in considerable detail. The first-order approximations to the general solution, viz., the ordinary and consistent P/sub 1/ and B/sub 1/ approximations, are then correlated with the various approximations treating the scattering-in term using the Greuling-Goertzel method as a basis of comparison. These first-order approximations are examined for both isotropic and anisotropic scattering in center-of-mass coordinates. The coupled set of differential equations relating the flux and slowing down density in lethargy space are reproduced for the special case of a bare reactor with sinusoidal fission source. (auth)
