LARGE He$sup 3$ NUCLEAR POLARIZATION

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
Nuclear polarization of 40% was attained in He/sup 3/ gas at room temperature by optical pumping techniques. Substantial He/sup 3/ polarization at moderate pressures and in a favorable environment made possible nuclear scattering experiments involving He/sup 3/ targets. The polarization obtained in a particular experimental arrangement depended on the He/sup 3/ sample pressure, on sample geometry, and on the character of the resonance radiation employed for optical pumping. These factors and the means for measuring the polarization were discussed. (C.E.S.)
