Important uses of radioactive and stable isotopes in physical chemistry are reviewed, with special emphasis on the work and ideas of Ole Lamm. Exampies are given from the following fields: the dependence of nuclear properties on the chemical state; chemical effects of rachoactive decay, interaction of radiation with matter, including applications of the Mossbauer effect in structural chemistry; and tracer applications in studies of distribution, diffusion, kinetics, and analytical chemistry.
