RANGE MEASUREMENT AND PARTICLE IDENTIFICATION IN A PLATE-LOADED FILAMENTARY CHAMBER

A plate-loaded filamentary chamber consisting of 104 alternate iayers of 1-mm dia plastic scintillator filaments and Au plates of approximately 1.5 g/cm/ sup 2/ was used to measure the ranges and identify particles arising from the decay modes: K/sup +/ and up to st r e (as Fe/sup 59 /sup +/ + e (as Fe/sup 59 /sup 0/ and K/sup +/ and up to / + /sup +/ + . Two range spectra were obtained: one including both muons and pions and one exhibiting almost exclusively particles recognized as e (as Fe/sup 59 /sup +/ from K/sup +/ and up to st r e (as Fe/sup 59 /sup +/ + e (as Fe/sup 59 /sup 0/ byff their decay.
