A system is described for detecting electromagnetic quanta in the infrared or millimeter wave spectrum. The system may be opernted continuously over a period of time without requiring renewal or replacement of a detecting element. Incident quanta outside the visible spectrum are converted to visible quanta. The system is free of noise in the absence of infrared or millimeter wave quanta for enhanced low-level resolution of incident radiation. (R.J.S.)
