COMPARISON OF REACTIONS OF COPPER-63 COMPOUND NUCLEI FORMED BY ALPHA- PARTICLE, PROTON, AND CARBON-ION BOMBARDMENTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4722126
A radiochemical investigation of the reactions of alpha particles with Co/sup 59/, protons with Ni/sup 62/, and carbon ions with V/sup 51/ was performed to determine the extent to which deexcitation of the Cu/sup 63/ reaction intermediate is independent of its mode of formation. Excitation functions were measured for the ( alpha , alpha n), (p, alpha n), (C/sup 12/, alpha n), ( alpha , alpha 2n), (p, alpha 2n), (C/sup 12/, alpha 2n), ( alpha ,2p), (p,2p), (C/sup 12/,2p), ( alpha ,2n), and (p,2n) reactions at alpha-particle and proton excitation energies of 20 to 50 Mev and carbon-ion energies up to 120 Mev. Higher probabilities for alpha-particle emission were observed in reactions initiated by alpha particles, and, similarly, incident protons enhanced the proton emission events. It was assumed that all the other measured nuclear reactions were the result of evaporation from a Cu/sup 63/ compound nucleus. The non-compound contributions to the ( alpha , alpha n), ( alpha , alpha 2n), and (p,2p) yields were calculated after applying a correction to the Cu/sup 63/ excitation energy to compensate for the different average angular momenta introduced by the protons, alpha particles, and carbon ions. The Co/sup 57/, Co/ sup 58/, and Co/sup 61/ products were each found to have noncompound components comparable in magnitude and energy dependence to the compound-nucleus portion of the excitation function. 48 references.
