THE ENERGY SPECTRUM OF NEUTRONS FROM STOPPED $pi$$sup -$ INTERACTIONS IN EMULSIONS

The energy distribution of neutrons originating in the capture of stopped meson ( ceramic materia /sup -/) interactions in nuclear emulsion was determined. The neutron spectrum was obtained by observing the energy distribution of some 10,000 knock-on protons. By differentiating the knock-on proton spectrum one can obtain the neutron spectrum. The results indicate that the neutrons produced in ceramic materia /sup -/ interactions have a Maxweliian distribution with a most probable energy near 5 Mev. To check the results obtained above, the procedure was reversed. It was assumed that the neutron spectrum follows statistical theory and that the peak of the distribution appears at E = T = 5 Mev. By integrating the equation for the neutron spectrum one obtains a theoretical curve for the knock-on proton spectrum. The results indicate that there is excellent agreement between the experimentally obtained knock-on proton spectrum and the calculated proton spectrum. It can be concluded that the neutrons emitted in ceramic materia /sup -/ interactions follow statistical theory and have an average nuciear temperature of 5 Mev. (auth)
