Results of the measurement of the differential cross section of 15.2 Mev neutrons scattered elastically from U, Th, Bi, and Ta are presented. An associated particle time-of-flight system with an energy resolution at 15.2 Mev of 2.5 Mev was used to separate the elastically and inelastically scattered neutrons. Monte Carlo calculations were used in correcting the data for multiple scattering and attenuation of the neutrons in the cylindrical scattering samples. The diameters of the scatterers used were from 0.4 to 0.7 of the mean free path of a 15.2 Mev neutron in the scattering material. The corrected data were compared with the theoretical optical modei predictions of Bjorklund and Fernbach. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the scattering of 15.2 Mev neutrons by deformed nuclei, in order to determine the extent of agreement with theoretical studies of deformation effects in the Optical Model. U, Th, and Ta have highly deformed nuclei. Bi, a spherical nucleus, was measured for comparison. In comparing the experimental differential cross sections with the theoretical predictions of Bjorklund and Fernbach, significant variations were observed in the case of U, Th, and Ta, with the angular distribution appearing somewhat washed-out'' compared with the theoretical predictions. It was concluded that these variations might be due to nuclear deformations, since a similar effect was seen in scattering high energy electrons from deformed nuclei. The total elastic cross sections were also measured by integrating the differential cross sections, and were found to be for U, 3.21 plus or minus .16 barns, for Th, 3.13 plus or minus .14 barns, for Ta, 2.63 plus or minus .13 barns, and for Bi, 2.55 plus or minus .13 barns.
