GENERATION OF EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4720381
An apparatus for producing gaseous plasma with extremely high temperature is described. Deuterium or tritium is rarified in a container in a uniform magnetic field of 1 to 10 kilogauss. An additional nonuniform magnetic field is also provided in the annular space between an inner and outer electrode. A voltage from 10 kv up to 200 kv is applied to the electrodes, which ionizes the gas and causes a discharge between the electrodes. This causes a hot circulating plasma to be formed, which is further heated by the nonuniform magnetic field, causing thermonuclear reactions to take place. The design of the apparatus and variations of the design are described in detail. (M.P.G.)
