GROWTH OF SINGLE CRYSTALS OF LEAD, CADMIUM AND BISMUTH USING THE BRIDGMAN METHOD

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4720333
The Bridgman technique was used to grow single crystals of lead, cadmium, and bismuth about 1/2 in. in diameter and 3 in. long. Rigid quartz or graphite molds were found to be satisfactory for growing single crystals of lead and cadinium, but a soft mold'' was needed in order to grow single crystals of bismuth. Lowering speeds of approximately 1/3 in. per hr were used in the bismuth runs. Lowering speeds of 2 in, per hr could be used with cadmium and 3 in. per hr with lead. Two techniques are described for coping with the tendency of bismuth to supercool which results in rapid crystal growth after nucleation. (auth)
