Nonlinear optical properties of TeO{sub 2}-PbO-GeO{sub 2} system were investigated and their correlation with the structural modification was discussed. Third-order optical nonlinear susceptibility, {chi}, ranged between 10.7 x 10{sup -13} esu and 4.95 x 10{sup -13} esu, and decreased with increasing GeO{sub 2} addition. Analyses of the Raman spectra suggested that these glasses are mainly composed of [TeO{sub 4}], [TeO{sub 3}] and [GeO{sub 4}] structural units. It was concluded that polarizability of Pb{sup 2+} ion in TeO{sub 2}-PbO glasses overwhelmed the effect of structural modification of [TeO{sub 4}]tbp{r_arrow}[TeO{sub 3}]tp. In TeO{sub 2}-PbO-GeO{sub 2} glasses addition of GeO{sub 2} resulted in the decrease of {chi} values. This behavior was attributed to the formation of [GeO{sub 4}] polyhedra at the expense of [TeO{sub n}] polyhedra and Pb{sup 2+} ions which normally showed a higher contribution to {chi} than [GeO{sub 4}] polyhedra.
