ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE SPECTROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF GENERAL METALS AND RARE EARTH ELEMENTS IN RESIDUES (IRON FLUX METHOD)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4720075
A method for the determination of general metals and rare earth elements in residues by the iron flux method is applicable to any type of sample that can be converted to an oxide, or to certain residues that can be ground. The sample in the form of a dry residue is mixed with iron flux. Pellets of the resultant dilutions are spectrographed between Cu electrodes using a d-c arc aligned with a large quartz Littrow-type spectrograph. The spectra are evaluated by visual methods using Fe as internal standard. Elements that can be determined are Al, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cr, Co, Pb, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, Sr, Sn, Ti, V, W, Zn, Ce, Dy, Eu, Gd, Ho, La, Lu, Nd, Pr, Sm, Sc, Tb, Yb, Y, Er, and Tm. The method is also applicable to the determination of Be between 0.01 and 0.0005% with respect to residue by amendments to the spectrographic procedure. (P.C.H.)
