Influence of the initial conditions on the adiabatic compression of a column of plasma (in French)

Journal Article · · Nuclear Fusion
A plasma created by a pulsed reflex discharge and preheated by oscillating electromagnetic fields is subjected to adiabatic compression. The ionic and electronic temperatures are of the order of several ev. The electron density is 1014 cm-3. The magnetic field trapped in the discharge is uniform, reversible, and well determined before compression. The electronic and ionic temperatures, density of neutrals, electron density, level of ionization, magnetic field compression and mirror ratio can be varied at will. A battery of 28 capacitors of 2.5 mu f and 25 kv enables the production of a 70-kgauss magnetic field in a volume of 280 cm3. Rise time is 1.5 mu sec. A short circuit permits a field duration of 100 mu sec. The magnetic compression compares favorably with theoretical conditions. (C.E.S.)
