ELECTRON SCATTERING MEASUREMENTS USING A DOUBLE FOCUSING BETA-RAY SPECTROMETER

Journal Article · · Nucl. Instr. Methods
The results of an investigation dealing with the measuremented of reflected (backscattered) and transmitted (through-scattered) electrons are reported. The incident electron energy chosen in the measurement was 10 kev, and both back- and through-scattered electron energies were measured as a function of various angles of electron incidence. The scatterers made use of were commercially available metal foils of aluminum, silver, and gold. The distributions of the different electron energies are given together with the most probable and average energy loss, the latter being compared with the nonrelativistic stopping-power formula for electrons in matter. The backscattering coefficient for electrons, which are scattered through 170 l from an aluminum foil, is given the value 0.2%. Working on the basis of the present experimental results, it would appear that a Fermi-Curie plot will not be subject to any practical scattering distortion for energies above 10 kev using an aluminum foil thickness below about 0.2 mg/cm/sup 2/.
