The successful introduction of a ceramic plunger in the fuel system of Cummins` heavy-duty diesel engines is recognized as the first application of a sub-micron precision ground ceramic component in high-volume production. Process development was accomplished by using simulation on scaled-down thru-feed centerless grinding equipment and by using a systems approach to determine key variables for a production diamond grinding system. Various other applications for ceramics in diesel engines are also discussed. The customers for diesel engines request a very reliable product to minimize down time. They are willing to pay higher price for a reliable product. The overall cost, including the savings gained by a more reliable engine with ceramic plunger, actually promotes the implementation of ceramics.
