The purpose of this paper is to study the effectiveness of machine code generation by Ada, C, FORTRAN, and Pascal compilers in the Digital Equipment Corporation`s VMS programming environment. First, we investigate the machine code generated by each language for a set of test algorithms and not the dissimilarities among strategies employed to accomplish the tasks of the tests. Then we assess the individual execution times of these strategies in order to determine which language generates the most efficient code for that particular task.
