VARIATIONAL CALCULATIONS ON THE BINDING ENERGY OF THE ALPHA PARTICLE. I. HARD-CORE POTENTIALS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B

The upper and lower bound for the energy of the alpha particle are calculated. The two-body interaction used is a central, static potential with hard core that describes the low-energy scattering data and yields the experimental p-p /sup 1/S/sub 0/ phase shifts up to around 300 Mev. Numerical integrations are carried out by a Monte-Carlo method. The effect of using different forms of variational wave functions is investigated. The results obtained are -29.3 Mev for the upper bound and - 83.8 Mev for the lower bound. (auth)
