THE DECAY OF Eu$sup 146$(4.7d) TO Sm$sup 14$$sup 6$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
The electron-capture and positron decay of 4.7-day Eu/sup 146/ to levels in Sm/sup 146/ is investigated with scintillation counters, magnetic spectrometers, and coincidence and directionalcorrelation techniques. The complex gamma spectrum extends to 2940 kev, with the most prominent transitions being those-of 635, 687, 704, 749, 902, 1061, 1300, and 1536 kev. Conversion electrons are studied with permanentmagnet spectrographs and an intermediate- image spectrometer. Levels in Sm/sup 146/ are established at the foilowing energies: 749 (21), 1384 (4+, 3-), 2051, 2288, 2884, 3180, 3202, and 3464 kev. A number of less certain levels are postulated on the basis of energy and intensity considerations. Positron branches of 2107, 1466, and 798 kev proceed to levels at 749, 1384, and 2051 kev, respectively. Directionai-correlation measurements are carried out on the 635-749 kev gamma cascade, but the results are ambiguous. A tabulation of energy-level data for the region of neutron number 82 to 88 is presented. (auth)
