Production of very slow pions by 9 GeV protons on emulsion nuclei

The energy spectra and angular distribution of slow pions produced in NIKFI-R emulsion by a 9-Bev proton beam were studied. The production of slow pions is found to be independent of the target nucleus and characteristic for the elementary nucleon-nucleon interaction. The properties of positive and negative slow pions are compared, and observation of eight cases of sub-barrier'' (energy below the Coulomb barrier) positive slow pions is reported. The results strongly indicate that at least part of the slow pions are not emitted from within the parent nuclei, but are vehiculated out'' by unstable systems that decay irto pions just outside the nucleus.
